A little bit about the park
Mesa Verde National Park is located in the Four Corners area of southwestern Colorado. Although the ruins, many carved directly into sheer cliff faces, date back to the 1200's, the location was not discovered by non natives until the late 1800's when it became a local draw for tourists.
In 1906 the area was given official "National Park" status. This was due in part to the extensive presence of cliff dwellings throughout the area. With the granting of "National Park" status the area became more available to individuals and scholars that wer interested in the ruins.
The park is now open to visitors all year long, but due to the elevation of over 7000 feet, during the winter many area of the park are not accessable and tours are unavailable. During the times when the snow is melted there are many things that visitors are able to do. The plateau is full of ruins and hiking trails. The more popular ruins require a ticket to be purchased at the park visitor center in advance so make sure you stop there before you head out to any ruins to explore.
Importiant Points
